Sound Affects

  • Recreational Program: The Guitar Factory is providing an adaptive recreational music program for individuals with developmental disabilities. Our mission is to promote social, emotional, physical, and behavioral well-being through music and recreational music experiences. By using a combination of playing musical instruments, singing, and listening to music, individuals will be able to increase emotional fulfillment through creating a completed sound. This social setting allows an exciting experience for the individual that cannot be found in any other music therapy program.

  • Our weekly program will provide a fun curriculum that will incorporate types of music such as reggae and jazz through percussion, singing, and listening to music. Each class will be once a week for 55 minutes and be led by a highly trained music instructor with experience in working with the developmentally disabled and their staff. Research shows that for growth and change to take place, gradual, long term work toward developmental skills is preferable. Achieving changes through music that will improve quality of life will more likely happen with repetition and consistent attendance. Our program starts at six weeks but longer sessions are available.

  • Music interventions used will be the vehicle for improvement and positive change. Some of the music interventions that will be used are:

Lyric identification/analysis

Songwriting

Improvisation

Drumming

Movement to music

Music making (singing, playing instruments)

Musical Games

& More!

The 12 week Sound Affects program could have a significant positive impact on the lives of the clients, while bringing them the joy that comes from sharing music together.

  • Testimonials: “The Guitar Factory has been an incredible experience for our clients at Baker Victory Services. The teens we bring weekly are being taught the fundamentals of music, enhancing their creativity, improving self-expression, focus, communication and social skills. What is great about the program is that you don't have to have musical experience or abilities to be in this class and the teens are having fun every week!”

-Sonia Polak/Activities Director at Baker Victory Services

I am 100% impressed with Guitar Factory’s cutting-edge Sound Affects program! Sound Affects fills a void in our community by providing the opportunity for children and adults who have unique needs or disabilities to connect with each other and their community through music-making. The Sound Affects room at Guitar Factory exudes “cool” and sets the stage for a truly unique and meaningful experience. The facilitator is passionate about sharing her love of music and makes each participant feel appreciated and important. The creative and therapeutic music activities utilized are specifically designed to empower participants to participate fully, encourage self-expression, and foster positive peer relationships. As I observed a Sound Affects session, I, too, felt the joy that lit the eyes of each group member as his or her contribution to the music-making process was celebrated. I see Sound Affects growing by leaps and bounds as groups and agencies learn how valuable the program is in improving self-esteem, communication, social, and leisure skills, and building partnerships within our community.”
