Part of a personal collection for the last 30 years. Studio use only and it looks it. This OB-8 is in outstanding condition, especially for its age. Tested, inspected and passed with flying colors. This synth looks, plays, and sounds amazing.

These are never perfect, but this one is pretty close. This one is missing the top two side screws on each side that secure the top on for transport (Pop Top Mod) this is a popular thing to do to these machines so you can gain access to the circuit bords and insides easily. (Pictured)

The 1984 Oberheim OB-8 is an 8-voice analog polyphonic synthesizer and the final model in Oberheim’s classic OB series. Units manufactured in 1984 typically featured factory-installed MIDI implementation, which was initially tucked into a recess on the left wooden side panel before later production runs moved MIDI ports to the rear panel

The 1984 Oberheim OB-8 stands as one of the definitive pinnacles of the classic analog polyphonic era. Released at a crucial turning point in synthesizer history, it bridged the gap between raw, unstable VCO grit and modern digital control.

By 1984, Oberheim had fully embraced the burgeoning MIDI protocol, transitioning the OB-8 from a closed ecosystem to a highly connectable studio workhorse.

While predecessors like the OB-X and OB-Xa were notorious for overheating, the OB-8 introduced massive stability improvements and deep software modulation via a Z80 processor.

The Voice Engine: You get 8 true analog voices driven by highly stable CEM (Curtis) chips. Each voice sports two discrete VCOs capable of blending sawtooth, pulse, and triangle waveforms simultaneously.

Feature Mode Description Audio Layout Split Mode Divides the keyboard into two separate zones. Two distinct 4-voice patches. Double Mode Layers two programs on top of each other. Thick, stacked 4-voice patch. Unison Mode Monophonic mode that stacks all 16 oscillators. Monstrously fat bass/lead drones. Why the 1984 Model is Coveted A late-production 1984 model with factory MIDI solves the primary hurdle of integrating classic 80s gear into modern setups. It provides the lush, cinematic "brass and strings" sound made famous by icons like Prince, Queen, and Depeche Mode—without forcing you to search out rare external converter boxes.
