The 2002 Washburn WI-64 is a flagship model from Washburn's Idol Series, a line introduced in 1999 that earned high praise for its innovative take on the traditional single-cutaway design. Celebrated by players as an ergonomic, high-value workhorse, the WI-64 won a Guitar Player Editor's Pick award for its premium features, which were typically reserved for far more expensive instruments.
The core design philosophy of the WI-64 was to fix the traditional "heavy single-cut" issue. By designing a wider base, Washburn was able to build a significantly thinner mahogany body. This redistributed the mass so that the guitar remained perfectly balanced while standing or sitting, while drastically reducing shoulder fatigue. The thin body is paired with a one-piece mahogany set neck featuring a slim, highly carved neck joint, offering completely uninhibited access to the 22nd fret.
Voice Contour Control (VCC): Instead of utilizing a standard push-pull coil tap—which can suffer from volume drops and single-coil hum—the VCC system uses unique tone pots. Turning the knob blends the dual humbuckers continuously into a single-coil voicing. This gives players a spectrum from thick, warm humbucking tones to bright, glassy single-coil sounds without adding standard 60-cycle hum.
