The Rickenbacker 4001C64 folklore centers on its unusual design quirks—specifically, the reversed/left-handed headstock paired with a right-handed neck on a left-handed body—which stem from how Paul McCartney’s original 1964 bass was built

From Liverpool in 1963 to the present day, this instrument meticulously recreates the greatest ancestor of the industry standard bass guitar. It is authentic in every detail, even to the ‘horseshoe’ bass pickup of 1931. A fully laminated neck with striped headstock runs the full length of the body for unparalleled tone and sustain. The only concession to modern technology has been a redesigned dual truss rod system permitting round wound strings as standard.

The McCartney Gift: Rickenbacker gave Paul McCartney a prototype/early 4001S bass in August 1965 (though the instrument itself dates to 1964) during a Beatles tour in Los Angeles.

The "Flipped" Build: Because McCartney is left-handed, Rickenbacker built him a left-handed body, but used a right-handed neck assembly. This resulted in the distinctive reverse-orientation headstock and backward-turning vintage-style tuners.

The Rickenbacker 4001C64 series was introduced as an ultra-faithful, vintage-correct recreation of that exact 1964/1965 instrument, preserving the horseshoe bridge pickup, toaster-style neck pickup, and the quirky flipped headstock layout.
